New food: Pork Steak

When we were at the market a couple of weeks ago, our of the vendors had something neither Jeff nor I had had before: pork steaks. She said to cook it up just like beef steak, and we decided to give it a try. This was a pricey bit of meat: $5.50 a pound, with a lot of waste (fat and a chunk of bone) that I didn’t notice at the market. We got a 1.4 pound piece and brought it home, where I cleaned it up and chopped it up into 6 smaller pieces (making 3 meals for the 2 of us, so the cost per meal wasn’t so bad.) We had it for the first time last week, just cooking it up in a pan and serving it up with some gravy and mashed potatoes (not what I would normally do to any steak but cube steak, but it was what we were in the mood for.) The verdict, at least for me, was that it was tasty and had a great flavor, but we might as well stick to cheaper cuts of pork for our pork dishes; on the rare occasions that I’m in the mood for steak, I prefer beef, and our local beef farmer puts steak on sale just often enough to scratch that itch.

We’ll be using the rest of the pork in goulash tomorrow night, so we’ll see how it turns out in that.
